Parteek Bhatia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala. He has more than eighteen years of academic experience, including six years at D.A.V College Amritsar. He has earned his B.Tech from SLIET and MS from BITS Pilani. He has completed his Ph.D on "UNL Based Machine Translation System for Punjabi Language" from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology. He has published more than 75 research papers and articles in Journals, Conferences and Magazines of repute. His research work with UNDL foundation, Geneva, Switzerland involved participation in Advanced UNL School at Alexandria, EGYPT in 2012 and at Geneva, Switzerland in 2013 and 2014. He is a winner of Gold Medal at International competition UNL Olympiad II,UNL Olympiad III and UNL Olympiad IV conducted by UNDL Foundation in year 2013 and 2014. He has authored six books including Simplified Approach to DBMS, Simplified Approach to Visual Basic and Simplified Approach to Oracle. He is acting as Principal Investigator of DST Funded research project on "Automatic Generation of Sign Language from Hindi Text for Communication and Education of Hearing Impaired people". He is acting as Co-PI on Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) funded research project on "Innovative Research in Pedagogy with Mini-MOOCs blended with instruction strategies to enhance quality in Higher Education". He has successfully completed research Project on Development of Indradhanush: An Integrated WordNet for Bengali, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Konkani, Oriya, Punjabi and Urdu Sponsored By Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Govt. of India.
Mini MOOC on Beginning SQL: A Simplified Approach has been developed to equip the learners to perform basic operations on database, joining of tables and aggregation of data in SQL.
This course has been developed as the outcome of Innovative Research in Pedagogy with Mini-MOOCs blended with instruction strategies to enhance quality in Higher Education” sponsored by Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), and Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala.
This course has been running at FutureLearn Platform (4th largest online course portal similar to Coursera) from Sept 2017 on invitation basis for Indian students.
The unique feature of this course is that it has been specially designed according to the needs of Indian learners (or Asian Continent learners). We know that our students face problems during learning from video lectures in terms of language used in these sessions, accent and pace of presenter, complexity levels of contents and limited engagement by the presenter etc.
To cater our learners effectively, all the video lectures have been developed bi-lingual. It means all video lectures are available in English as well as in Hindi language. For every topic, you will get two options for video lectures; you can watch it in English or in Hindi. However, in Hindi lectures, Hindi has been used as mode for communication while contents have been provided in English language, because ultimately learner has to reproduce the concept in English during examination or placement interview.

I always want to do research for the benefit of society. The digital divide among different societies made me to ponder on ways to bridge this divide. After analyzing different factors of digital divide, language barrier appears to be as the major hindrance for the spread of knowledge. To bridge this divide, Universal Networking Language (UNL) is very promising platform. UNL is an artificial language that is based on interlingua approach by using EnConversion (conversion of source language to UNL) and DeConversion (conversion of UNL to target language) processes. I pursued doctorate thesis on “UNL Based Machine Translation System for Punjabi Language” in year 2012 from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala.
My work on UNL gave me opportunity to work with UNDL foundation, Geneva under advanced international UNL schools conducted at IIT Bombay in year 2012, Alexandria Egypt in 2013 and UNDL Foundation, Geneva in year 2013 and 2014 where I represented Punjabi and Hindi languages. My participation in these schools was fully funded by UNDL foundation, Geneva. My work on UNL also got recognized when I became gold medalist in International UNL Olympiad II in year 2013. I also got gold medal in UNL Olympiad III and UNL Olympiad IV conducted by UNDL foundation in April 2014 and December 2014 respectively. I also got recognition for developing best grammar for EnConversion and DeConversion for Punjabi and Hindi languages.
I am also working with my PhD research scholar on developing multilingual Question-Answering system by using UNL. I have published quality research papers on subject area in reputed SCI journals. I have also successfully completed following projects of UNDL foundation for developing lexical resources for Hindi and Punjabi language.
I got the opportunity to work with pioneers of NLP like Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharya and Dr. Rajiv Sangal during my work as Co-PI for Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY) funded research project titled “Development of Indradhanush: An Integrated WordNet for Bengali, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Konkani, Oriya, Punjabi and Urdu” under a consortium consisting of 8 institutes lead by IIT Bombay, Mumbai. We have developed Punjabi WordNet, an important lexical resource as the outcome of this project. WordNet maintains Synsets that represent each concept in a language. Synset is composed of gloss, example sentences and set of synonym words to represent concept. Besides synset data, Punjabi WordNet also maintains lexical and semantic relations.
I am also working to solve the problem of disambiguation by using machine learning and Punjabi WordNet with my PhD research scholar. Our work on WordNet got published in 1 reputed journal, 4 international conferences and a book Chapter.
My association with blind and deaf school of Patiala for processing of Braille books motivated me to provide technological solutions to problems of hearing impaired people. For this, we have developed a prototype for automatic generation of Sign Language from text. This research work takes the momentum, when we got the funding for three years from SEED division of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India for our research project titled “Automatic Generation of Sign Language from Hindi Text for Communication and Education of Hearing Impaired People”.
The main objective of this project is to develop Indian Sign Language generation system from natural language input Hindi text. The major objectives of this project are as follows:
Our work on Sign Language got published in 3 reputed international conferences.
My work with FutureLearn under Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) funded project titled as “Innovative Research in Pedagogy with Mini-MOOCs blended with instruction strategies to enhance quality in Higher Education” provides an opportunity to develop Mini-MOOC for SQL course. This course will run in mid-term of 2017 in allied 11 institutes of India. The learning data generated through this course will be used to perform learning analytics to develop a platform for adaptive learning.
